Brought motion to an idea I had awhile ago, the concept of updating the old Magic 8 Ball to have more modern phrases. The original ones are a little bland, I figure you could always updated it for modern slang, new generations, other languages, it lends itself to so many different directions. I settled on some Gen Z phrases to stay young since I am firmly a millennial.
It's a really simple model I made and animated with some very exaggerated cartoon motion, a lot of squash and stretch, follow though, and easing. I wanted it to feel fun and playful since it is a novelty.
I found it as a reason to work with the new Redshift toon shading options, so I mixed in some cel shading and halftone versions in the composite. It's a nice set of options but there's still a lot of power you have in the composite of layering and mixing and blending different passes.
I also wanted there to be a "magical" component to it so I did like a very showy reveal with particles, smoke and glows. The particles are X-Particles and the smoke comes from Embergen. I wanted a strong contrast between the plain light background and the magic look when it reveals the phrase.
